Gasparilla Pirate Fest

The Gasparilla Pirate Fest is a tradition that celebrates the spirit of the sea. The pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla sail across Tampa Bay in a fleet of more than 100 vessels. The pirate ship, Jose Gasparilla, built in 1954, has a mystical quality that overpowers the defending flotilla. A group of defending ships joins forces with the Gasparilla and escorts the pirate ship north through Hillsborough Bay and into Seddon Channel, which lies between the islands of Davis Island and Harbour Island. The ensuing pirate invasion quickly takes hold in Tampa.

During the Gasparilla flotilla, the pirate ship Jose will appear poised to invade the city. Tampanians will then launch a defending flotilla along Hillsborough Bay. Hundreds of boaters will join the event. The Flotilla will end the event at the Tampa Convention Center, where Mayor Jane Castor will hand over the Key to the City. This parade is the biggest in Tampa, and has been a staple of the city’s cultural life for more than 60 years.
