Chin Advancement Surgery in Tampa Florida
What is a chin advancement?
Chin advancement or augmentation is a procedure frequently performed at the same time as a rhinoplasty to create a more balanced and harmonious facial profile. The chin can be enhanced by inserting a small implant or by advancing the chin bone itself to create a more pleasing jaw line. The choice depends on your age, anatomy, amount of deficiency and your preference after discussing it with Dr. Ruas during your consult.
Who is a good candidate for chin advancement?
Patients who have “weak chins” and have a stable dental occlusion (how their teeth fit together) are potential candidates for either a chin augmentation with an implant or a chin advancement to create a more pleasing facial profile.
How is the surgery performed?
Chin implants are inserted through a small incision under the chin and placed on your chin bone to increase it’s projection and apparent size. A chin advancement (sliding genioplasty) is performed through an incision inside your lower lip. The chin bone itself is moved forward a few millimeters. It is held in place with small metal plates and screws. This procedure does not move your teeth per se nor does it change the way your teeth fit with each other. It simply improves the way your chin looks in relation to the rest of your face.
What does the recovery involve?
You will be asked to wear a chin strap to minimize the swelling for approximately one week. The stitches will dissolve within 7-10 days. As with all surgery we ask that you not exercise or lift any heavy objects (nothing over 10 pounds) for one month.
Both procedures are typically performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient.
