Breast Augmentation in Tampa Florida
What is a breast augmentation?
A breast augmentation is a procedure to place implants in the breast to enhance the shape and size of the breasts. Many women desire a figure that is more in proportion with their body. Often women who have had children want a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance to the breast. Breast implants can also be used to balance an uneven appearance.
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure using saline (salt-water) filled or cohesive gel implants that are placed either behind or in front of the chest muscle. This procedure may be combined with a mastopexy (breast lift) to enhance the rejuvenation of your breasts.

Saline and Silicone Breast Implants
Every woman is different, and each woman is evaluated as an individual to determine which implant will produce the desired effect for her body.
In general, breast implants come in many shapes and sizes, but all are made of a thin, solid silicone shell. The shell surface may be textured to reduce the chance of scar formation around the implant. Smooth implants are softer and generally less likely to be felt through the skin.
Dr. Ruas will discuss your options with you to chose the implant most suited for you.
How is the surgery performed?
General anesthesia is used for the procedure. An incision is made in one of 3 places:
- Periareolar – around the nipple, disguising the scar where the darkly-colored skin ends.
- Infra-mammary fold – in the crease under your breast, hiding the scar in the fold and under your breast.
- Axillary – in the arm pit, hiding the scar in a crease.
One approach may be more appropriate for your anatomy than others. Your surgeon will discuss this with you.
The implant is placed either behind or in front of the pectoralis muscle, inflated with saline, and the incision is closed. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis.
How long is the recovery time?
Most patients are back to normal activities in 24-48 hours, with restrictions. Someone will need to stay with you for the first 24 hours. Patients usually are able to return to work in 5-7 days with limitations on physical activity. You will be given pain medication. No drains are used. It takes a few weeks for the swelling to go away completely.
